Henrico County Public Schools (HCPS) works to provide students from pre-kindergarten through high school with the proper instruction, information and support to achieve academic excellence. HCPS has 46 elementary schools that educate students in kindergarten through fifth grade. In addition to high-quality classroom instruction in common core courses that will give students a solid academic foundation, HCPS elementary schools also provide weekly art and music instruction, as well as physical fitness. Your child can participate in a variety of extracurricular activities that will teach them valuable skills and complement the in-classroom experience.
There are 12 middle schools in the Henrico County School District. The middle school curriculum is designed to prepare students for more rigorous high school courses by offering the basics in math, language, science, social studies, and more. Students can play on a sports team or join a club to create an even more enriching academic experience that will help them develop skills like organization, leadership, and effective communication.
There are nine high schools and two technical centers in HCPS catering to students in Grades 9-12. The curriculum is different for each individual student depending upon what he or she plans to do upon graduating high school. Four HCPS high schools offer junior ROTC programs for students who plan to serve in the military. There are a variety of course offerings in addition to common core classes, including honors and Advanced Placement, as well as work study programs that allow students to gain co-operative work experience, and vocational/trade programs at the technical centers. High school students can participate in a multitude of extracurricular activities, ranging from student government, to the newspaper, to community service clubs, to special interest clubs, like the chess, ecology, and media clubs. HCPS high schools also offer a range of athletic options. Henrico athletic teams have won more than 75 Virginia High School League state championships.
HCPS operates specialty centers in each of its high schools and in three of its middle schools. Specialty centers allow students to focus on their learning experiences by offering advanced courses to students who excel in and enjoy particular areas of study and/or have specific career goals. These specialty programs partner with local businesses, universities, and community organizations to give students real-world experiences. Each specialty center has its own admissions process, with specific requirements and testing. Rising ninth graders are welcome to apply to the specialty center of their choice.
